A federal court in San Jose issued a preliminary injunction blocking construction of an immigration detention facility in Gilroy, California, after Santa Clara County and the state challenged the project. The court found no proof the government conducted a meaningful environmental analysis before building on a site previously used for agricultural research that contains hazardous waste.
Construction and demolition are paused while the litigation continues.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Skipping the environmental review on a site with hazardous waste sitting under it is the kind of shortcut that only looks cheap until somebody has to explain it to a judge. The government didn't lose this round on ideology, it lost on paperwork it apparently never bothered to file. That is a low bar to trip over.
