A University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll of 1,200 registered voters finds Democrat James Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton 42% to 39% in the Texas Senate race, a reversal from June when Paxton led by one point. Talarico draws 91% of Democrats and 37% of independents, while Paxton manages 79% of Republicans and just 11% of independents.
The same poll shows Governor Greg Abbott leading Democrat Gina Hinojosa 45% to 40%, and finds Trump underwater in his own state, 51% disapproval to 43% approval. Voters rank inflation, corruption and the economy as top concerns, and majorities oppose new data center construction in their communities.
A Talarico-Paxton race matters nationally because Democrats haven't won a Texas Senate seat since 1988, and control of the chamber is at stake. Another Texas Politics Project poll is expected in October.
