Michigan Senate Democrats are praising Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks after gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson named her as running mate, with colleagues predicting Brinks would push for a more active lieutenant governor role than the office's traditionally ceremonial one.

Sen. Dayna Polehanki called Brinks a closer with unmatched knowledge of the Legislature, while Brinks herself described bringing an ‘active governing approach’ built on existing relationships with lawmakers. She and Benson would form the state's first all-female gubernatorial ticket.

The Democratic ticket faces Republicans John James and Jay DeBoyer, with a consultant noting DeBoyer's legislative experience mirrors what Brinks offers on the Democratic side. Brinks will be formally nominated at the state party's August 29 convention.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Every incoming lieutenant governor's colleagues discover, right on schedule, that this particular one is uniquely indispensable and definitely ‘a closer.’ It's an earnest tradition, mostly harmless, and entirely a coincidence that the people saying it will be working with her for the next four years.
