Poland's Border Guard plans to install an electronic monitoring system with motion sensors along 112 kilometers of its border with Ukraine, split between two units covering 69 and 43 kilometers respectively, funded by the European Union. Warsaw is separately upgrading its Belarus and Russia border defenses with observation towers and drone-detection equipment.

Border Guard Brig. Gen. Wioleta Gorzkowska said the agency couldn't proceed with 3 billion zlotys in planned purchases, including armored vehicles and machine guns, because President Karol Nawrocki vetoed the law funding them through the EU's SAFE program. The moves come as Poland tightens security amid continued Russian strikes on western Ukraine.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Sensors are cheaper than a fight with your own president, so Poland is buying the thing it can still afford. A vetoed arms bill sitting next to a new drone-detection tower is the kind of contradiction a border guard has to salute anyway. Motion sensors are handy, but they don't drive an armored vehicle to where the trouble is.
