President Trump will visit the Nassau County Police Academy to unveil FBI data showing murder and non-negligent manslaughter fell an estimated 18.1% in 2025 and robberies fell 18.5%, which a White House official calls the largest year-to-year decline on record. FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Todd Blanche are expected to join him, as Republicans look to shift midterm attention away from inflation and economic fallout from the Iran war. The decline, however, predates Trump's return to office, with homicide rates having plummeted in 2023 and 2024 to pre-pandemic lows under a mix of policing approaches with no single common policy.

Democrats counter that Republicans are overstating federal policy's role in a trend that started before Trump resumed the presidency, while pointing to two U.S. citizens killed by immigration officers as evidence that federal enforcement has made communities less safe, not safer.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Taking a victory lap for a trend that started on someone else's watch is a time-honored political tradition, but it works better when the data cooperates instead of visibly predating the claim. If the crime decline is proof the law-and-order agenda is working, someone should explain why it started working two years before the agenda existed.
