Morocco’s ruling coalition dominates low-turnout Parliament election

Morocco's Authenticity and Modernity Party won 97 of 395 seats in Wednesday's parliamentary election, with the National Rally of Independents second at 66 seats, provisional results showed.

Turnout was 38 percent among 16 million registered voters, the lowest since 2007, a year after Gen Z-led protests demanded better healthcare, education and jobs following a migration crisis at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

The Islamist Justice and Development Party rebounded sharply to 54 seats from just 13 in 2021, running on an anti-corruption message, though its leader ruled out joining a PAM-led coalition he called tainted by fraud.

Without an outright majority, the PAM must now form a coalition, with its candidate for prime minister to be appointed by the king; the party has pledged 5 percent annual growth, 2 percent inflation and a million new jobs over five years.
