Otar Romanov-Partskhaladze, once Georgia's Prosecutor General, has formed and will command a volunteer unit called Georgievsky fighting for Russia against Ukraine, according to Russian state agency Tass. He named it for the 1783 Treaty of Georgievsk, which made a Georgian kingdom a Russian protectorate, and says the unit's mission is to fight an evil threatening the world.

In Georgia, Romanov-Partskhaladze faces charges over an alleged plot to assassinate businessman Levan Jangveladze under a statute covering contract killings. He lost his Georgian citizenship after acquiring a Russian passport, and describes his enlistment as voluntary.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A prosecutor who becomes a fugitive who becomes a militia commander is not exactly a résumé that inspires confidence in the outfit he is now leading. Naming your unit after the treaty that ended your own country's independence is either a joke or a confession, and Tass is the last place that would tell you which. Either way, the man's old caseload and his new one seem to rhyme.
