Russian authorities have charged businessman Oleg Varyukhin with treason over records found on his phone showing he paid a mandatory Ukrainian military levy into the state budget while living in Ukraine for 27 years. He was detained at a Russian airport in May 2026 after flying in via Moldova to update identity documents he'd held since Soviet times.
His lawyer says this marks the first known Russian treason case built on tax payments rather than direct donations to Ukraine's military, and calls the charge absurd since paying taxes is not optional for a resident of any country. The court was not persuaded, and Varyukhin remains in custody.

Paying your taxes used to be the one thing nobody could arrest you for not dodging. Moscow has now found a way to make the most boring chore in adult life a hanging matter, and all it took was a man going home to fix his paperwork. If the Kremlin keeps reading phones this closely, every Russian who ever paid a parking ticket abroad ought to think twice before booking a flight home.
