Conservative commentators including Spencer Pratt claimed Texas Senate candidate James Talarico's recent flu was actually a cover for a mental health crisis, a theory that collapsed within hours and drew public scorn even from fellow right-wing figures. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Talarico's opponent, had already amplified doubts about the illness on social media before the conspiracy fully bloomed.

Commentator Tony Ortiz called the reporting behind the claim 'such shit work' and suggested Talarico could sue. Researcher Jared Holt said the episode exemplifies how thin claims can hijack campaign coverage regardless of accuracy, pulling attention from policy to invented scandal for weeks before the midterms.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When your own side's commentators are the ones calling the work sloppy, the theory didn't so much get debunked as get sent home early. A man caught the flu. Anybody who has spent a week on the couch with a box of tissues knows that's the whole story, and the only crisis here was a shortage of people willing to check before they posted.
