Nepali officials say roughly 20,000 houses in flood-ravaged border areas must be rebuilt after an Aug. 26 glacier collapse sent ice, rock and mud through settlements near the Chinese border, killing at least 1,204 people. More than 4,200 remain missing, and thousands are displaced.

Rescue teams from South Korea, India and China are searching hydropower tunnels for workers believed trapped, including nine South Korean nationals near the Upper Trishuli-1 plant. Officials say the search for survivors, and then for bodies, will continue as long as there is any hope.

Authorities are also weighing new locations for rebuilt settlements, saying rebuilding in the same flood-prone spots would repeat the risk. Displaced residents, many lacking identification documents lost in the disaster, are being routed through makeshift schools and emergency services as normalcy efforts begin.
