GAO reports that 41 percent of Coast Guard units sit in remote or high-vacation-rental areas where housing supply is tight and costs outstrip the Pentagon-set housing allowance; 76 percent of Coast Guard members rely on private-sector housing. Forty percent of the service rotates to new duty stations annually, and neither DOD nor the Coast Guard fully tracks which areas pose the worst affordability problems, a gap auditors first flagged in 2024. Nine GAO recommendations on military housing remain open as of July 2026.
The Coast Guard launched a Nationwide Housing Satisfaction Survey in fall 2025, its first service-wide feedback effort since 2012, but has yet to use the results to update policy. DOD, meanwhile, told GAO it doesn't plan to publish a comprehensive list of critical housing areas until May 2027.

Forty percent of these families move every year, into places where a landlord can charge whatever the tourist season will bear, and the government's answer is a survey that took thirteen years to reboot and a list that won't land until 2027. That is not urgency, that is a filing cabinet with a nice cover letter. Somebody's kid is doing homework in a rental that eats the whole housing check while Washington finishes its paperwork.
