Record rainfall in Japan's Chiba prefecture has killed at least four people and injured five, with more than 100mm falling per hour — roughly triple the August average and the highest hourly rainfall ever recorded in the country. Power was cut to over 20,000 households and 7,000 travelers were stranded overnight at Narita Airport.

A level five emergency warning, the highest alert, was issued Thursday and downgraded to level four by Friday morning, though landslide and flooding risks continue. More than 100,000 households were asked to evacuate.

The deluge follows a week of back-to-back storms — Dolphin, Chan-Hom and Peilou — hitting Japan, the Philippines and China, with Dolphin also cutting power in Okinawa and prompting the evacuation of over a million people in China.
