Constitutional law professor emeritus Laurence Tribe told CNN's Erin Burnett that President Trump's handling of the press, following CNN's denied access to a White House state dinner, exceeds the power once held by King George III and France's Louis XIV. Tribe argued George III at least answered to a parliament, whereas Congress under the current makeup does largely what the president wants.

Tribe called the situation 'dictatorship' and said Trump wants to be 'not just King Trump, but Emperor Trump.' He offered no historical parallel he considered adequate, saying there 'really are none.'

A man reaching past two kings and a few centuries to make his point about press access is not being subtle, and he is not trying to be. Whether you buy the comparison or not, it is worth noticing that access to a guest list at a dinner is now the kind of thing that gets measured against absolute monarchy. That used to be a bigger ask.
