Luis Manuel Aviles, 48, a Nicaraguan handyman with a U.S. work permit who has lived in the country 19 years, was arrested by Border Patrol in Key West while taking his car to the mechanic, his wife said. His son Joshua was at the time nearing his ninth month aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which set a U.S. military record for uninterrupted time at sea amid reported supply and morale concerns.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest and said Aviles will remain in ICE custody as the government seeks his deportation, stating 'having a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate our nation's laws.' The arrest comes amid a broader Trump administration rollback of immigration protections for military families; the AP has found at least dozens of such parents and spouses detained, with six deported and one self-deported.

Joshua Aviles wrote on Facebook that he learned of his father's detention while still aboard the carrier, calling it 'heartbreaking' and questioning how he could continue working 12-plus-hour days. His sister said Joshua enlisted partly believing it would help their father's path to citizenship and free him from fear of arrest.
