Q&A: Photographer Jeremiah Ariaz

Jeremiah Ariaz, a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow, spent between 2022 and 2026 photographing all 151 operating newsrooms in Kansas, finishing his fieldwork this past June. His project, The Kansas Mirror, documents both active newsrooms and the offices that closed along the way, some after more than a century in business.

Ariaz notes that roughly two newspaper offices close nationally each week, with a third of the country's newspaper offices gone since 2005. A forthcoming October issue will revisit the community of Marion, Kansas, site of a 2023 police raid on the Marion County Record that resulted in the death of one of the paper's co-owners.
