Porter Airlines cancelled a flight from Victoria to Toronto on 6 August after a child refused to stay seated with a seatbelt fastened while the plane taxied toward the runway. Crew and the accompanying parent made repeated attempts to secure the child, and when those failed the crew returned the aircraft to the terminal, saying it could not safely take off.
A spokesperson said the entire flight had to disembark, rather than just the child and parent, because processing the paperwork to remove only two passengers would have caused the plane to miss the airport's 12:30am closing time. All passengers were rebooked onto a flight the next day.
One passenger disputed characterizations of the child as unruly, saying the child appeared frightened and tried to hide under the seat rather than run around, while another passenger said the process of resolving the situation and disembarking took nearly an hour.
