The Treasury Department lifted sanctions on Russian diesel imports after an Oct. 9 call between Trump and Putin, a move six senators from both parties say violates a 2022 law requiring congressional consultation before such sanctions are eased. That law also conditions any lifting on Russia withdrawing from Ukraine and recognizing its independence, conditions the administration has not claimed are met.

Trump framed the move purely as a domestic price fix, posting that diesel prices would come down 'IN RECORD NUMBERS' due to 'TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz' and the Russian energy announcement together. Diesel prices have risen 67% over the past year to $6.20 a gallon. Neither the White House nor Treasury responded to requests for comment.

When six senators who can't agree on lunch all say you broke the same law, you probably broke it. The law Congress wrote asked for a phone call to the Hill before easing up on Russia, and instead the call went to Putin. Diesel at $6.20 is a real pinch, but you don't fix a leaky roof by borrowing shingles from the man who's been throwing rocks at the house.
