Republican Byron Donalds says he'd consider keeping Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, who has served since 2021 and now proposes dropping hepatitis B, chickenpox, Hib and pneumococcal vaccine requirements for public school attendance. Democrat David Jolly has vowed to fire Ladapo on day one, drawing standing ovations for promising to bring back, in his words, science, data, math and vaccines.
Ladapo and Donalds don't fully align either: Donalds attributed Florida's measles outbreak to illegal immigration, while Ladapo linked it to abortion opposition. Two separate 2025 polls found roughly 60% of Florida voters oppose eliminating vaccine mandates entirely, and the Florida Chapter of the American College of Physicians, representing 10,000 members, has formally requested a hearing on the proposed rule changes.

When two candidates for the same job can't agree on why children got measles, and neither answer involves the actual virus, that tells you plenty about how this campaign is being run. Six in ten Florida voters apparently want their kids' vaccine schedule left alone, and somehow that's the position getting treated as the political gamble. A surgeon general who'd rather debate abortion than count outbreak cases is a strange kind of doctor to keep on retainer.
