Florida professors fear being targeted or cancelled, faculty review shows

A survey of more than 250 Florida faculty members, part of a larger 13-state AAUP poll of nearly 2,800 respondents, found professors describing fear of being recorded or reported by students over course material. Respondents cited post-tenure review, mandatory lecture recording policies, and the removal of DEI from general education requirements as sources of a chilling effect.

One professor said they installed surveillance cameras at home given public-records exposure tied to their research on diversity; others described syllabi posted online being scanned for forbidden words. Not all respondents agreed the concerns were warranted, with some calling AAUP's framing exaggerated.

When a professor says they've started treating every student like a possible informant, that's not paranoia showing up out of nowhere, it's a system working as intended. A syllabus that has to dodge the word 'transportation' because of what letters it contains isn't an education policy, it's a scavenger hunt with a career on the line. The dissenters in the survey get their say too, but the cameras on that one professor's house are a fact, not a mood.
