Prosecutors present ’80 percent gun’ in Baja murder trial

A ballistics expert testified in Ensenada this week about a homemade 9mm pistol found in a truck linked to one of three men on trial for the methodical killing of two Australian brothers and their American friend, whose bodies turned up in a dry well on a Baja beach in May 2024.

The gun, stamped with US-made polymer parts and no serial number, was found in a defendant's truck and belonged, according to a former girlfriend's testimony, to a man she says kept a hit list. The catch: casings recovered from the well and a nearby burned campsite were from a .45-caliber weapon, not the 9mm on display.

When pressed on why so much trial time went to a gun that doesn't match the physical evidence, a prosecutor told reporters only that 'tomorrow you will find out how the 9 was used.' More ballistics testimony was expected before the week's hearings wrapped.
