Captain Damon Sacco and client Walter Chapman landed what experts believe is the largest Atlantic blue marlin ever caught off the U.S. East Coast, a fish over 11 feet long weighing 1,260 pounds, caught roughly 100 miles off Cape Cod at Atlantis Canyon. The catch came within 142 pounds of the world record, set off Brazil in 1992.

University of Maine fisheries scientist Walt Golet called the catch remarkable given the region's cold water, and the fish's head has been sent to his lab to estimate its age, possibly 25 to 30 years. The three-hour fight left bill marks in the boat's transom, and the meat was divided among about a dozen people, with Chapman planning some for fish chowder.
