Lithuania plans to fortify its new Gizai substation, located about 30 kilometers from Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, with blast-resistant fencing, tunnel-detection systems, and reinforced concrete structures to shield transformers from drone strikes, Reuters reported. Litgrid CEO Andrius Semeskevicius said the 35-hectare facility is being designed to withstand explosives-laden trucks and Shahed drones capable of carrying 100 kilograms of explosives.

The substation will be the first new energy facility built in the region since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022, with the country's armed forces advising on physical protection measures.
