Economic Frustration Tests Trump’s Standing With Rural Voters, New KFF-AP Poll Finds

A new AP-KFF poll of more than 2,000 rural registered voters finds about half believe the economy is worse than when Trump returned to office, with grocery, gas, and healthcare costs cited as top concerns. Roughly half still approve of Trump's overall job performance, but only about 4 in 10 approve of his handling of the economy specifically, and just 45% of rural Republicans say he's improved their local economy.
Three-quarters of rural voters rate their local cost of living as 'only fair' or 'poor,' up sharply from about half in a 2017 survey. On healthcare, only 17% say Trump administration policies have positively affected their costs, while 41% report no impact and another 41% report a negative one, despite the administration's promotion of a $50 billion rural health program that more than 80% of rural voters say they've heard little or nothing about.

Half the country living paycheck to paycheck and still giving a fellow decent marks is a peculiar kind of loyalty, the sort you'd show an old truck that starts most mornings even though the heater quit years ago. A $50 billion program nobody's heard of is not a program, it's a press release with a budget line attached. When three quarters of your own voters say the cost of living has gone from fine to lousy, the polling shows the gap between what got promised on the stump and what showed up at the register.
