An anonymous source in Volodymyr Zelensky's office dismissed former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov's call for wartime elections as 'highly bizarre,' after Fedorov posted a video address urging Ukraine to go to the polls. Zelensky himself has not personally responded.

Fedorov was installed as defense minister in January 2026 and fired by Zelensky in July, reportedly amid a clash with then-commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. The firing triggered protests that continued even after Syrskyi himself was also dismissed, with Yevhenii Khmara, former head of Ukraine's Security Service, now running the defense ministry.
