A federal grand jury indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center in April 2026 on wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges, alleging it secretly funneled over $3 million to informants embedded in groups including the KKK and Aryan Nations between 2014 and 2023. The SPLC denies the charges, calls the case vindictive prosecution, and says the informant program 'saved lives'; critics at Lawfare called the prosecution among the most cynical the DOJ has brought.

Within 72 hours, researchers found white nationalist channels on Telegram and Gab recasting the indictment as proof the SPLC manufactured the extremism it claimed to fight, and linking it to antisemitic conspiracy narratives and 'great replacement' theory. The pattern echoes past extremist use of federal actions, like Waco and Ruby Ridge, as persecution narratives that fuel recruitment.
