Michigan secretary of state hopefuls discuss election security, office priorities

Five nominees for Michigan Secretary of State, Democrat Garlin Gilchrist, Republican Anthony Forlini, and minor-party candidates Eric Borregard, Christine Sloan, and Scott Aughney, appeared at a League of Women Voters forum to lay out sharply divergent visions for the office. Gilchrist pledged to refuse federal requests for voter data, while Forlini focused on transparency around local Election Day protocols.

Borregard proposed lowering the voting age to as low as 16 and loosening ID requirements; Sloan called for pulling Michigan out of the ERIC voter-roll-sharing consortium and auditing the rolls; Aughney, convinced current practices violate state law based on his own six-year review, proposed scrapping electronic voting and pollbooks for hand counts.

All candidates addressed threats against election officials, with Gilchrist and Sloan both proposing faster coordination with law enforcement to relay threats.

Five people running for the same office and barely two of them agree on what year it is, election-wise. That's democracy working as designed, or it's a sign the job description needs a rewrite; either way, the voters get to sort it out in November, which is more than most of us get with our own family arguments.
