Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the Greek daily Kathimerini that the Russia-Ukraine war has reached a strategic stalemate and that a negotiated settlement remains elusive. He said talks are stuck because Russia demands all of Donetsk while Ukraine refuses.
Rubio cited a coordinated drone attack on ships in the Black Sea and warned Russia is preparing to target Ukraine's energy grid this winter, while Ukraine has grown its own long-range strike capability. He said Washington stands ready to help broker a deal but offered no sign one is near.
Zelenskyy separately told Polish PM Donald Tusk that Kyiv is preparing for three-way talks with the US and Russia, saying the holdup is on Washington and Moscow's side, not Ukraine's.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Calling something a stalemate from a podium in Washington costs nothing and changes nothing on the ground in Donetsk. The secretary's formula, ready to help whenever everyone else is ready, has been the house position for a while now and the war has not noticed. Saying you stand prepared to facilitate is not the same as anybody actually sitting down.
