Ukrainian commander Andrii Biletskyi posted a video of himself calmly standing in Svyatohirsk, undercutting Vladimir Putin's claim that Russian forces had captured the city, according to the Institute for the Study of War's September 7 assessment. A Kremlin-aligned military blogger acknowledged the video proved Ukrainian control, a rare public admission against the official line.

ISW noted the Russian military's habitual exaggeration both undermines its own combat effectiveness and gets weaponized by Putin at the negotiating table. The Donetsk regional administration confirmed the city remains under Ukrainian control despite constant shelling, and Zelenskyy has since reinforced the area with two units under Hero of Ukraine recipients.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
It takes a special kind of confidence to announce a captured city while the man supposedly conquered is filming a calm walking tour of it. Even the propagandists on Moscow's own payroll couldn't keep a straight face this time. If the plan for peace talks rests on Russian battlefield claims, somebody ought to check those claims against a video first, the way this one just got checked.
