The death toll from catastrophic flooding in Nepal and China passed 1,000, with Nepal's disaster agency reporting 987 deaths and 3,916 people still missing, including 583 foreigners, and Chinese authorities reporting 16 deaths. At least 11,814 people have been rescued so far using helicopters to reach communities cut off by destroyed roads and bridges.

The disaster began August 26 when a glacial collapse in the Himalayas — a bedrock failure powerful enough to register as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event — sent rock, ice and meltwater into valleys, triggering floods that swept away homes and infrastructure. Rescuers' immediate priority is finding roughly 900 workers missing from 12 damaged hydropower projects, about 500 of whom are believed trapped inside tunnels.
