Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin with 105 mph winds Friday night, and as of Monday afternoon about 120,000 Florida power customers remained without electricity, mostly in the Panhandle. Gov. Ron DeSantis cited restoration percentages by county, ranging from essentially full in Bay County to 80% in Walton County, and said the National Guard had cleared 1,700 miles of roadway and distributed water, meals, ice, and tarps.
DeSantis held the briefing outside a Pensacola Walmart, which is offering displaced residents mobile showers, hot meals, Wi-Fi, charging stations, and a laundry service he described in some detail. The state also opened a disaster loan program of up to $500,000 for farmers and ranchers across 30 counties, and a survey to gauge business losses.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A governor standing in a parking lot reciting county-by-county restoration percentages while a Walmart runs the laundry service is about as honest a picture of disaster response as you'll get: the big institutions show up late and the retail chain down the road ends up doing the actual comforting. Glad the tarps got handed out. Just notice who ended up supplying the folding tables.
