Serhiy Rebrov, who coached Ukraine's national team until stepping down this spring, apologized on Instagram after video surfaced of him playing padel doubles with former Russian national team player Vasily Berezutsky in Marbella. Rebrov said he knew of Berezutsky's 2022 antiwar stance but was unaware he had since coached in Russia, adding that he doesn't follow football in what he called 'the terrorist state.'

Berezutsky, once a fixture at CSKA Moscow, publicly opposed the war in 2022 before relocating to Spain; he briefly coached Russian club Ural before leaving the post this year. Rebrov, now a vice president of the Ukrainian Association of Football, said he wanted to apologize to Ukrainians offended by the match while insisting his pro-Ukrainian position stands.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nothing clarifies the stakes of a war quite like a former national coach having to explain himself over a recreational racket sport. The apology itself confirms the surveillance is real, even if the offense was a doubles match in Spain.
