Macron’s UK visit charts course for new relationship with PM Burnham

French President Emmanuel Macron visited the UK this week, becoming the first EU leader to meet new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, timed to the opening of a Bayeux Tapestry exhibit at the British Museum that Macron, Burnham and King Charles toured together.

Analysts quoted say Macron, with eight months left in office, wants to shore up alliances for his legacy, while Burnham's priorities remain murky and reportedly skew domestic. Migration was expected to dominate substantive talks, particularly the ‘one in, one out’ Channel crossing pilot, which one migration expert says has confused migrants about how deportations and legal pathways actually interact.

Sticking points on agriculture and a youth mobility scheme were expected to be present but likely downplayed in favor of areas of agreement, such as rhetorical support for Ukraine.
