HUR: Russian lab may be conducting biological weapons research on isolated island

Ukraine's HUR military intelligence says a laboratory complex on Russia's Lisiy Island, officially the civilian Center for Experimental Physiology, may actually be conducting biological weapons research for the Russian Defense Ministry. HUR representative Andrii Cherniak told the Kyiv Post the facility is guarded by the FSB and Federal Protective Service, ringed with air defense and electronic warfare gear, with surrounding waters closed to visitors since 2023.

Cherniak said Russia began a major reconstruction of the site in 2022 on Putin's orders, replacing decaying Soviet-era buildings with modern labs equipped for dangerous pathogens and chemicals. He noted a May job posting sought a lab assistant to work with pathogens in Groups I-IV, the most dangerous of which cause fast-spreading, incurable diseases.

Cherniak linked the timing and funding of the Lisiy Island rebuild to expansion at Russia's 48th Central Research Institute, another facility with alleged biological weapons ties. The claims come from Ukrainian military intelligence, an interested party in an active war, and have not been independently verified.
