Ukraine has exhausted its stock of interceptor missiles for U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, CNN reported, with a source saying Ukrainian forces intercepted almost none of the ballistic missiles fired overnight into October 14. That strike hit three power plants in Kyiv and energy infrastructure in Kharkiv.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned for months that the shortfall undermines Ukraine's ability to defend itself, saying in August he was making millions of phone calls to secure supplies and that the country held only a tenth of the interceptors it needed. On October 15 he said Ukraine would resume strikes on Russian oil refineries after Moscow kept attacking during a three-day pause Kyiv observed at Washington's request, while suggesting he could ease that stance in exchange for more Patriot missiles.
