King Harald V of Norway died Friday at 89 at Oslo's National Hospital, the palace said, ending a reign that began in 1991 after the death of his father, King Olav V. As a child he fled the Nazi occupation of Norway with his mother and sisters, first to Sweden and then to the United States, while his father and grandfather went into exile in Britain.

His son has automatically become King Haakon VIII. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre praised Harald's more than three decades of service, and the palace noted funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
