Brazil's Oct. 4 election handed sweeping gains to right-wing parties in both houses of Congress, with the Liberal Party, aligned with presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, winning 19 new Senate seats to bring its total to 28 of 81 starting in 2027. Combined with three other right-wing parties, the bloc now holds a Senate majority.
An analysis by the Indigenous Missionary Council found those four parties voted against Indigenous rights between 85.6% and 100% of the time in recent years. APIB coordinator Dinamam Tuxá called the result bleak and said it was not what his organization expected.
A record 79 Indigenous candidates ran for Congress this cycle, but only three won seats. Bolsonaro and incumbent President Lula now head to an Oct. 25 runoff after neither cleared 50% in the first round.
