President Trump headlined a two-day Republican midterm convention, giving a rambling second-night speech that started after 10 p.m. and ran about 25 minutes, during which he admitted to being tired of politics and teased bringing out an opera singer instead.

He boasted about crowd size, mocked a Senate nominee's wardrobe, and touted the stock market and administration policies before an afterthought reminder to vote. GOP leaders including Speaker Mike Johnson, Vice President Vance, and vulnerable House and Senate candidates all shared the stage with him.

The event closed with balloons and a tenor singing an aria while Trump waved, having spent none of his remaining airtime on his own signature legislation or on Americans' cost-of-living concerns.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Tying your candidates to a boss whose numbers are in the ditch is a strange way to run a rescue mission. It's like hiring the fellow who backed the truck into the barn to give the safe-driving speech at the county fair. The balloons fell right on schedule, which is more than you can say for the poll numbers.
