The EU Asylum Agency reported 332,000 applications for international protection across the EU, Switzerland and Norway in the first half of 2026, down 17% from the year before and the lowest first-half total since 2021. Afghans led applicant numbers at 39,000, followed by Venezuelans and Bangladeshis, while France, Italy, Spain and Germany received the most applications overall.

The agency credited Syria's political transition and the EU's cooperation with origin and transit countries, including recent deals with Tunisia and Mauritania trading aid for migration enforcement. New rules since June fast-track applicants from countries with recognition rates under 20% or from nations deemed safe, and the agency notes 56% of applications now fall into those expedited categories.

Fewer than a third of processed applications were approved, a rate the agency itself says will shape future filings, meaning the system that reports declining demand is also the one narrowing the door.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
You can make the line go down by building a smaller door, and that is most of what happened here. Call it cooperation, call it deals with transit countries, either way it is easier to keep a number low than to keep a promise. The agency is honest enough to say the low approval rate will keep suppressing future applications, which is a strange thing to boast about.
