Cardiologists from Stanford, Johns Hopkins and Yale outline four warning signs that can precede a heart attack by days or weeks: chest pain or pressure, pain radiating to the neck, jaw or shoulder, unusual breathlessness after mild exertion, and nausea or stomach upset.

Doctors note roughly two-thirds of patients recall chest pain in the month before a cardiac event, and symptoms often intensify in the final days.

The advice is straightforward: sudden severe symptoms warrant a 911 call, while milder or ambiguous ones still merit telling a physician rather than waiting it out.
