The House of Lords opened debate on a bill capping foreign political donations and banning cryptocurrency contributions outright, days after Reform UK received 72 million pounds from two crypto billionaires, Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, the largest single political donations in British history. The bill would cap overseas donors at 100,000 pounds a year and has already cleared the Commons.

Delo, convicted in the U.S. in 2022 over anti-money-laundering failures at BitMEX, gave 36 million pounds, matching Harborne's identical sum. Critics including a former MI5 chief cited crypto's traceability problems; Reform leader Nigel Farage said the donations broke no laws and threatened to target trade union funding if Labour pushes retroactive rules.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Two men hand over 72 million pounds in forty-eight hours and the response from the party that took it is basically 'nothing illegal happened here.' That may even be true, which tells you plenty about where the line currently sits. A democracy that lets a couple of crypto fortunes outweigh every small donor combined isn't being bought exactly, it's just being outvoted by money before anyone shows up to the polls.
