‘Putin is patient zero. He must be stopped,’ Zelensky tells U.N. General Assembly

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the U.N. General Assembly that Russia lost nearly 249,000 soldiers killed or badly wounded between January and August while capturing just over 1,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, most of which Ukraine has since retaken. He called Vladimir Putin 'Patient Zero' of a war he says keeps expanding to new demands, from Donetsk to Odesa and Kharkiv.

Zelensky said Putin has now promised roughly seventeen times over five years that victory in Donetsk is only months away, with the deadline moving each time. He said sanctions targeting Russian oil revenue aren't aimed at fuel or factories themselves but at the money financing the war.

He also said Ukraine expects a harsh winter as Russia targets its energy grid, and warned that Ukraine will respond in kind unless de-escalation happens before winter arrives.
