Florida officials announced criminal charges Monday against 10 people accused of running a poaching operation involving roughly 23,000 pounds of grouper, redfish, snapper and protected sea turtles, including hatchlings, with sales totaling more than $150,000. The investigation began in 2022 after someone involved approached an undercover officer.
Attorney General James Uthmeier said charges include racketeering and unlawful possession of marine turtles, carrying potential sentences of 65 to 75 years. He also said he will ask the Legislature to toughen poaching penalties, including turning some poaching offenses into felonies.
Uthmeier, appointed by Gov. DeSantis in 2025, is campaigning for the office in his own right against Democrat José Javier Rodriguez, a detail the news conference's timing and location make hard to ignore.

A ten-person poaching ring moving turtles and grouper up and down the coast sounds like a real problem, the kind that actually deserves the felony talk. But an elected official announcing it from a podium a month before his own election is the part that makes you squint a little. The turtles didn't ask to be a campaign prop, and neither did the fishermen who got undercut.
