The GOP's first-ever midterm convention is set for next Wednesday and Thursday in Dallas, scheduling that overlaps with the first two games of the new NFL season, according to Maggie Haberman of the New York Times. Haberman said people close to Trump privately admitted they had not been paying attention to the conflict when planning the event.

Haberman said the scheduling miss reflects how small Trump's inner circle has become, adding that members of Congress and senators are privately unhappy about attending, wary of giving Democrats footage of themselves seated for the speech. She said Trump himself does not seem especially concerned about midterm risk, unlike most of his party and his own advisers.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Booking a party convention against the NFL opener is the kind of mistake a card table committee makes, not a national campaign with a budget the size of a small country. If the people running the show missed something that obvious, it says plenty about who is left in the room and what else might be getting missed. Congress members grumbling privately about showing their faces on camera is its own kind of review.
