A seemingly technical change to international student visas could disrupt teaching and research at US universities

Starting September 2026, most F-1 and J-1 visa holders will no longer be admitted for 'duration of status' but instead for a fixed period, generally four years, after which they must apply to extend their stay.

The Department of Homeland Security estimates the change will add 393,500 new visa reviews annually, while also shortening the post-graduation grace period from 60 days to 30.

Universities warn the shift could disrupt research and teaching by international students, who made up nearly 1.2 million enrollees and contributed an estimated $55 billion to the U.S. economy in 2024; a similar proposal was withdrawn by the Biden administration in 2021 before being revived by Trump.

An agency that openly predicts its own policy will be disruptive, then implements it anyway in the name of more paperwork opportunities, is not exactly hiding the ball. It's just betting nobody with a visa can afford to complain loudly.
