South Korea’s main opposition People Power Party staged a rally in Seoul on Oct. 3, with nearly 70 lawmakers led by party chief Jang Dong-hyeok joining a crowd the party itself put at about 200,000. The immediate trigger was a Sept. 21 mine explosion in the demilitarized zone that injured three South Korean soldiers, two seriously, which opposition figures said President Lee Jae Myung failed to answer forcefully enough.
Lawmakers also objected to Lee’s prosecution reform push and a plan to expand the Supreme Court, which the opposition argues is designed to insulate Lee from court proceedings currently on hold. Lee’s government describes the same changes as a routine overhaul of the criminal justice system.
The rally was the first large opposition street demonstration since late September 2025, suggesting this fight has been simmering for a while.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When the party doing the headcount is the same party throwing the rally, 200,000 is a number to admire rather than trust, the way a fisherman's catch grows with every retelling at the dock. Calling a court-expansion bill a mere redistribution of powers, when it happens to protect the man signing it, is the kind of coincidence nobody buys twice. Both sides here are selling you their own arithmetic.
