The White House proclaimed Sept. 18, 2026 as National POW/MIA Recognition Day, honoring the roughly 80,000 service members still listed as missing in action and those who endured captivity in past wars. The proclamation notes the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency reached its 800th identification of Korean War remains last month.

Alongside the tribute, the proclamation credits the administration's ‘relentless efforts’ and pledges to ‘spare no effort or resource’ for accounting of the missing, without detailing new funding or policy beyond continuing DPAA's existing work.

The document also describes the POW/MIA flag flying over the White House and federal buildings as a ‘righteous covenant’ that the nation will never abandon those who served.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Eighty thousand missing is a number heavy enough to stand on its own without extra seasoning. It didn't need to be dressed up as a campaign promise about effort and resources when the agency doing the actual work was already getting the job done one identification at a time.
