No, there isn’t a ‘Democrats for Biggs’ movement, despite what new signs claim

Signs reading 'Democrats for Biggs' have appeared across Greater Phoenix, promoting Republican gubernatorial candidate Andy Biggs, but the signs name no supporters and the group behind them is Turning Point PAC – Arizona, a conservative nonprofit offshoot, not any Democratic organization. People promoted online as backing Biggs turned out to be former Democrats who switched parties years ago.

The campaign has also been tied to AI-generated images resembling state Rep. Lorena Austin holding the signs in Spanish, which Austin says are fake and has threatened to sue over. Turning Point PAC has spent more than $30,000 this cycle, including over $15,000 to a sign printing shop, and did not respond to requests to identify any current Democrats supporting Biggs.

Arizona law requires political ads to disclose who paid for them but does not require the claims themselves to be accurate, leaving voters with no way to verify who, if anyone, the signs represent.

Fifteen thousand dollars buys a lot of signs and evidently not one name. You'd think if the Democrats were lining up, somebody would have put a phone number on the thing. A law that makes you say who paid but lets the sign claim whatever it likes is a strange sort of honesty, and this is exactly what it was always going to get used for.
