Two wild Przewalski’s horse foals born in Kazakhstan after 200 years

Two Przewalski's horse foals were born in late August at a reintroduction center inside Kazakhstan's Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve, the first wild horses born on Kazakh soil in more than 200 years. Both foals are male, born to different mares but the same now-deceased stallion, inside a 140-acre enclosure.

The species was wiped out in the region by the mid-19th century through hunting, habitat loss and crossbreeding with domestic horses, and survived only through captive breeding programs in zoos. Over the past three years, 22 horses were relocated to Kazakhstan from European zoos as part of an effort to eventually establish a self-sustaining wild population of 40.
