The White House says a two-day G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill concluded with a consensus statement declaring that emerging technologies have the potential to unlock prosperity, enhance productivity, and expand opportunity for all peoples — a sentence that could be stapled to any product launch since the invention of the wheel.

The statement, hosted by the Commerce Department and OSTP, spans six pillars and produces the Carolina Principles for Emerging Technologies, urging countries to invest in research and enable trusted technology adoption. Secretary Lutnick called reaching consensus a historic moment of unity, while OSTP Director Kratsios described an optimistic vision for the future.

The Ministerial's real substance appears to have been fireside chats: Kratsios hosted Elon Musk, David Sacks, Mark Zuckerberg and Demis Hassabis, while Lutnick hosted Jensen Huang, Sam Altman and Palantir's Alex Karp — a guest list drawn almost entirely from companies with a direct financial stake in the phrase 'pro-innovation policy frameworks.' Deliverables included the AI Prosperity Objectives and AI Prosperity Compact, whose enforceability is, per usual, left undefined.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A consensus statement that no one can violate is not diplomacy, it is a group photo with footnotes. Twenty governments flew to North Carolina to agree that good things are good, then handed the microphone to the people who bill by the hour for delivering them. If the Carolina Principles ever bind anyone to anything, it will be the first accident in the history of the genre.
