Hungary has lifted its veto on opening negotiating clusters 2 and 3 in Ukraine's EU accession talks, according to European Pravda citing an EU source, with ambassadors at Coreper agreeing to invite Ukraine and Moldova to present negotiating positions.
The reversal follows months of repeated Hungarian refusals dating to July, each time blocking consensus despite the position lacking majority support among member states.
EU states are expected to approve a formal negotiating stance around Oct. 12, after Ukraine's parliament adopts legislation on minority-language education, with an intergovernmental conference potentially opening the clusters as soon as Oct. 13.
